World Day to End the Death Penalty: October 10th 2010

Members of the AI York group Amnesty International participated in the WORLD-WIDE ART PROJECT launched by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty. We sent messages of support or solidarity on real or virtual e-postcards, which were then used to compose an art project outlining a message of solidarity with Anti-Death Penalty Activists in the USA.

Last year 18 countries carried out the execution of  714 people. This number does not include executions in China, where Amnesty estimates the numbers to be several 1000s. Of all the countries in the Americas only the US uses the death penalty. Thankfully the whole of Europe, including the former Soviet Union, is now free from capital punishment.
