Marc Niyonkuru at our monthly meeting in York in February

A journalist from Burundi in the Great Lakes region of East Africa spoke at our monthly meeting in February. Marc Niyonkuru explained how young people linked with his country's ruling political party wreak violence on opponents, the government condones their actions and journalists are threatened with death if they report news stories that the government dislikes. Marc did just that and was a target for assassination but escaped to the neighbouring country of Rwanda, where he now lives with his wife and children.
