What we do

Amnesty International has 2.2 million members worldwide who share a vision of a world where every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments.

Amnesty in York

Members of the thriving Amnesty group in York are very active all year round. In addition to our monthly meetings our programme includes:

Letter writing & greeting card campaigns

We write letters to people who have the power to stop human rights abuses, and send greeting cards (messages of hope) in solidarity to people suffering injustice and human rights abuse.

Individual actions
Members campaign individually and cover many countries and continents as well as working on other specific campaigns such as arms control, the death penalty, business & human rights and violence against women.

Public Events
Each year we organise several public campaigns and awareness-raising events. One year, for example, we focussed on Burma with film and theatre events (Burma VJ and the Burma Play) and a very successful awareness raising afternoon in Rowntree Park. In town we handed out roses on Valentine’s day, part of the Amnesty Stop Violence against Women campaign. A huge Amnesty banner was put up in York Minster to mark the 60th Anniversary of the declaration of Universal Human Rights and in December in Coppergate the public sent greeting cards to prisoners of conscience from our AI stall. For our latest activities, take a look at our monthly blog posts.

Fundraising
We organise ceilidhs, Latin nights, quizzes, Amnes-teas and more.
